our second favorite thing behind cars. What is up with the over hopping of beers anyways. Is this the new hot sauce of the 2010's, where to be extreme is just the thing to do? I was out last weekend and got suggested an I.P.A that a friend of mine endearingly referred to as "Getting fisted in the mouth with hops". I don't get it. It's gross. Gimme some Ballantine or Murphys any day over one of these

I am not a fan of IPA beers. The darker the beer, the sweeter the booze.

It has taken me about 3 years to finally enjoy the taste of an IPA. They were just too bitter and hoppy for me

Overly hoppped IPAs taste like salad and I love them.

What changed? Did you will yourself into enjoying them, or just find some milder ones? I can't seem to make myself enjoy them, even if I can tell that they're good.

Ballentine? You cannot be serious.

rather than something over hopped, yeah, I am serious

I just looked at the ratebeer page, and WOW has that changed. Maybe they reformulated.
4-5 years ago it was a single digit beer and I won a "shittiest beer" competition with it. My dad's uncle used to work for the brewery and I have a ton of Ballentine gear. Maybe it's time to try it again.

Screw beer. Hard Cider's where it's at!

I am sure it hasn't changed. Just put it up against some Genesee Cream Ale though and it shines. I think hipsters took over ratebeer anyways

Well I'm making a bar for my basement, with bottle caps covering the bar top. I have about 7.5lbs (not sure on the count) but everytime I go to the store I look for new caps that I don't have- I've been avoiding the IPAs for as long as I could, but finally broke down and forced myself through a few 6-packs. After that, I gained an acquired taste for them

Porter/Stout lovers are living in the dark ages right now. I haven't had a good beer in probably 3 years.

The shit beer competition was:
1.) PBR
2.) Genny cream
3.) Old Milwaukee
4.) Golden Annivarsary (for $1.99 a sixer)
5.) Keystone Ice
6.) Schlitz
7.) Ballentine
8.) Scheafer
9.) Bud Ice
10.) OE 3.2
11.) Game Day Light (7-11's own beer!)
12.) Busch Ice
Ballentine was the winner with Keystone ice close behind. The rest of the pack was scattered.

It's an acquired taste. Like beer is to begin with. You want a beer that is hard to like, try a sour beer. I still cant get the hang of drinking those, and I will drink just about anything.

or smokebier. I have a bottle to mail to anyone that wants a jolt

I concur. Overly hoppy beers....bleah. My fridge is filled with some rather bland options right now, Modelo (wife alternates between that and Corona), some Blue Moon variety pack, Mama's Lil Yella Pils, Old Chub, Boddingtons, and some overly hoppy home brewed IPA.

Red Dog was pretty heinous too. I dunno if they still make it.

I saw it the other day. Icehouse was particularly nasty as well. Any idea on that one?
My roommate in colleges drink was the Stiff Drink:
equal parts icehouse and captain morgans rum in a coffee mug

It's allegedly produced in Ireland with all of the rest of the "good stuff" and shipped over here. I do have a theory though on why it tastes so good there:
Strike 1: LITERALLY there are only 2 beers you can get in Ireland - Guinness and Killians. After a while Guinness is bound to appeal to most pallets.
Strike 2: It's nearly impossible to find food in Ireland. It's not like "I'm hungry for tacos tonight and I can't find any food." These people literally don't eat. Spent a week there in 2011 and the best meals we had were at gas stations. After some time you get desperate for calories and... why hello, Guinness.
Strike 3: Ireland has like 2 days of sunshine per year and probably a total of 17 trees. Not a lot of reason not to drink.

Gross. I just can't get behind hard cider. I like cider, but hard cider just tastes like skunked cider to me. Would rather have a big delicious beer any day.

I don't take kindly to IPAs

God I love hops. The more hops the better. Really can't have too much in there. Like drinking a fresh cut lawn. Hops are simply the best.

IPAs are definitely a fad right now. I like the really hoppy stuff occasionally, but I also appreciate other styles that focus on the other components: yeast (Begian trippels like La Fin du Monde), malt (barley wines like Anchor Old Foghorn), or even the water (all Sierra Nevada beer has a high minerality or 'soft' water). Like anything though, usually the best beers aren't just one trick ponies, but they have a balance of tastes. I'm into sours and saissons right now. The flavors are subtle, but they are certainly beer for beer lovers.

I like a good IPA, but some are now just getting unpleasant.
